Harvesting our crops

For years, Greg has talked about building a vegetable garden...after RJ was born, he and Will got serious about it and a day later, we had a vegetable garden! It's funny, after Grady was born, he and Will built a sandbox and now this. I think he likes having a project as I get settled in with the new baby! It's been so fun and the boys have really gotten into it...especially the watermelons!

We planted a few watermelon seeds last year, thinking it would be a teaching opportunity but nothing would come of it. We got excitied when we saw sprouts growing a week or so later then several weeks later they just took off...by the end of the summer we had a little watermelon in a planter box!

So we held on to the seeds from last year's watermelon and planted those this year. Again, we had a few sprounts pretty quickly then they didn't grow much more. We decided maybe they weren't going to make it and we'd try again later. When we returned from our 2 week trip to Colorado in July, they had taken over 70% of the garden. We couldn't believe it! That was the beginning of bell peppers, tomatoes, a total of 4 full size watermelons, rosemary, squash (although these weren't very successful), and a handful of other herbs. It was really fun and so neat to see the boys enjoy it so much. We hope to work the soil over this winter and figure out a way to keep the ants out a little bit better...and plant a bit earlier too!!!
